Bergerac, Cyrano’s town
Awarded the label Town of Art and History, Bergerac is best discovered by wandering through its old town, between half-timbered houses and cobbled lanes running down to the Dordogne. On Place Pélissière, the statue of Cyrano de Bergerac awaits lovers: a perfect nod for a first date, since Edmond Rostand’s hero is the master of romantic declarations. Extend the walk to the Quai Cyrano, by the river, for a drink at sunset.
Vineyards for two
Around Bergerac, vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see, and many estates open their cellars to visitors. A tasting together is a great way to get to know each other: you compare your tastes, laugh at your hesitations and pick a bottle to share. Bergerac wines and Monbazillac, the renowned sweet wine, go wonderfully with Périgord cuisine, from duck confit to local walnuts.
Bastides and panoramas
Further south, Monpazier is one of the finest bastide towns in Périgord, with its wooden market hall and the arcaded Place des Cornières. A few kilometres away, Biron Castle dominates the countryside with its imposing silhouette. On the Black Périgord side, the hilltop bastide of Domme offers a spectacular panorama over the valley, and the Eyrignac Gardens, with their French-style topiary, invite you to a romantic stroll. On Lyad, Dordogne members share these lovely places; it is up to you to find someone to discover them with.
